When I booked our flights to Hawaii, I expected myself to produce a lot more “photography” than I actually did. That’s not to say I left my camera in the hotel room the entire trip. I took a fair amount of photos at every turn. The difference was that I sort of fell into that island vibe and really didn’t let myself work too hard to get pictures. Instead, I took a lot more pictures that were really just for my family without creative, social or technical satisfaction in mind. It was wonderful.
With that said, sometimes the best thing for the creative’s mind is a break. As of my writing this, I can honestly think of no better place to put the muscles and the grey matter at ease than in Hawaii. We opted for a trip to Disney’s Aulani resort on Oahu, which ended up being a perfect combination of family-friendly activity and entrancing calm.
Between the fresh sea food, the lazy river and the quiet of the private lagoon we couldn’t have asked for more. Yet we did, and Oahu answered with trips to North Shore, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki and Diamond Head. It really was everything that it is cracked up to be. I can’t recommend a tropical getaway to islands enough. However, if Hawaii isn’t in the cards for you and yours, don’t overlook the idea of a good winter getaway, even if it is just to use the indoor pool at a hotel in your area.
