Travel :: Hawaii Isn’t Bad if You’re Looking to Treat Yourself (It’s Great!)

When I booked our flights to Hawaii, I expected myself to produce a lot more “photography” than I actually did. That’s not to say I left my camera in the hotel room the entire trip. I took a fair amountĀ of photos at every turn. The difference was that I sort of fell into that island vibe and really didn’t let myself work too hard to get pictures. Instead, I took a lot more pictures that were really just for my family without creative, social or technical satisfaction in mind. It was wonderful.

With that said, sometimes the best thing for the creative’s mind is a break. As of my writing this, I can honestly think of no better place to put the muscles and the grey matter at ease than in Hawaii. We opted for a trip to Disney’s Aulani resort on Oahu, which ended up being a perfect combination of family-friendly activity and entrancing calm.

Between the fresh sea food, the lazy river and the quiet of the private lagoon we couldn’t have asked for more. Yet we did, and Oahu answered with trips to North Shore, Pearl Harbor, Waikiki and Diamond Head. It really was everything that it is cracked up to be. I can’t recommend a tropical getaway to islands enough. However, if Hawaii isn’t in the cards for you and yours, don’t overlook the idea of a good winter getaway, even if it is just to use the indoor pool at a hotel in your area.

We flew from Detroit Metro, though Seattle, and ultimately to Honolulu. The kids did pretty well, considering they took in 11 hours of flight time and a 45-minute shuttle ride to Aulani.

Secret beaches, treasure hunts, and food … ohhhhh the food.

I did fall into old habits and photograph a few strangers here and there on the trip. This family was fishing at on of the “hidden lagoons” near Aulani. The mother was smacking fish on the head with a rock!

When you’re visiting the North Shore of Oahu and your longest lens is an 85mm, you forget shooting surfing and head out for some famous Matsumoto shave ice!

The sunsets are amazing EVERY night. EVERY SINGLE night. I only photographed three out of nice, though :-/

Aulani isn’t your average hotel, nor does it look it.

We weren’t in flip-flops and and bathing suits the entire time. Dressed up for dinner.

Climbing Diamond Head crater with my son was a memory that I’ll cherish forever.

A before-sunrise photo shootout with my polaroid-touting Josie!

Disney’s Aulani before sunrise.

Pretty at every turn, I swear.

K & J walking one of the Lagoons in the Ko’ Olina district.

A few snaps from Pearl Harbor. The only somber moments of our trip. 100% must-see if you are ever in Hawaii.

There are surfer kids everywhere along North Shore. Another “street” shot.
